Liverpool’s optimism punctured by 2-0 loss at Burnley
SAM VOKES AND Andre Gray scored their first Premier League goals as Burnley stunned Liverpool with a superb 2-0 victory at Turf Moor.
“We had to be careful with Steven, he had a bit of a knock, and that’s probably as high tempo a game he’ll have played for a while”. But it’s only the start of the season and I can see a lot of good things.
The Wales global missed the first half of Burnley’s previous top-flight campaign with a knee injury which hampered his progress when he eventually came back but, after a confidence-boosting Euro 2016, the big frontman took Burnley’s first Premier League goal against Liverpool – and their first in the league in six matches – well.
The reds enjoyed over 80% possession in the game, with Burnley becoming the first side to win a league game with such little possession since possession stats were first recorded 11 years ago. “We have to say it wasn’t enough today”.
“Our timing and decision-making was not very good”.
Sam Vokes sent the Turf Moor faithful into a frenzy with his goal in the second minute – Burnley’s first ever against Liverpool in Premier League play.
“I am really impressed with the players as human beings and with their performance”, said Guardiola.
“Usually in a game like this we win if we don’t make the mistakes in the wrong moment, but we did and now we have to accept the result and carry on”.
Hull City became the first promoted side since Bolton Wanderers in 2001 to win their opening two matches when they triumphed 2-0 at Swansea City. We will work on it 100%.
“We had absolutely no luck and everybody needs to be more clinical”. We don’t expect every game to keep possession as much as some of the other teams – at times Liverpool had six in midfield.
“On the occasions that you are playing the clubs like Liverpool it’s even more important to give belief to everyone”.
“We are here for a reason and it’s a big task – we know that – particularly against these kind of sides because I think they’re excellent”.
