Liverpool Sign Ex-Arsenal Keeper Manninger
Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp believes the signing of Alex Manninger will enable the club’s younger goalkeepers to enhance their development.
LA Galaxy’s Steven Gerrard says he has no plans for his future after the current MLS season ends.
Wijnaldum, meanwhile, scored 11 goals and registered five assists for Newcastle in his first season in England.
Manninger is likely to be Liverpool’s third-choice keeper behind Simon Mignolet and new arrival Loris Karius.
“He brings us great experience and I know that as a person he is someone who every day will show what a great professional he is and will be important for the squad”. Having sent out up and coming ‘keeper Danny Ward on loan and allowed Adam Bogdan to move to Wigan Athletic for the year, should there be a goalkeeping crisis at Anfield, Klopp will have a willing and competent solution on hand.
The one-year deal, which is subject to worldwide clearance, has been announced by the Premier League outfit on their official website.
“Honestly, it was a surprise”. This is the moment I was waiting for until the end.
The Austrian’s ex clubs include Juventus, Fiorentina and of course Arsenal, for whom he played for way back in the 1997/98 season! After these years, in Italy and the last four years in Germany, I hadn’t given up, I hadn’t said “that’s it”, I still waited for the phone call.
He said: “Joe is one of our own players and if at all possible we would probably make that signing”.
Manninger last played a match in English football in May 2001 when Arsenal lost 3-2 to Southampton at the last ever game played at The Dell.
“But I’m definitely a guy who wants quality around and that is why I’ve chosen this club now, because it has got it”.
