Liverpool stuns Arsenal, Ibrahimovic stars for Man United
And now, with the “Wenger Out” brigade in full voice, we can truly say the Premier League season has begun.
The Reds surged to a 4-1 lead after 63 minutes in the season opener at the Emirates before handing Arsenal a lifeline with strikes by substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and centre half Calum Chambers. The Gunners managed to score three goals against Liverpool, but their defense was shredded for four.
After seeing a penalty saved by Simon Mignolet, Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead, only for Coutinho to reply with a picture-perfect free-kick in first-half injury time. The Liverpool took advantage and won the game. They found themselves 4-1 to the good before Arsenal could blink, with Coutinho firing in another after good work from Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane getting off the mark for the club in pretty fine fashion.
Klopp said he bore responsibility for his players switching off in the middle of the second half by encouraging a mass celebration in front of Arsenal fans after the fourth goal.
The spectacular leveller was probably more than Liverpool’s first-half performance deserved, with Jurgen Klopp’s side second best for much of the opening 45 minutes.
“It felt for everybody in this moment: “that’s it”. “But we showed a few nice signs, a few not-so-nice signs”.
Also around about this point, Arsenal fans realised – if they didn’t know it already – that this season was going to be exactly like every other season in the last decade.
The Frenchman, who celebrates his 20th anniversary as Arsenal manager in October, has now seen his team beaten at home in their opening league game three times in four years.
“It was a really intense game for both sides, so we used [half-time] to be more of a threat to them”, Klopp told reporters in his post-match press conference, while also labelling Coutinho’s free-kick “genius” and confirming the hamstring issue that forced his withdrawal was merely cramp-related rather than anything more serious.
“Physically we are not ready”, Wenger said. “We prepared well the players we have in, but I think you have to consider we have been a bit unlucky as well. You have to accept sometimes that you can not control absolutely everything even if you try to be as intelligent as possible”.
FC’s Gab Marcotti explains his reasoning behind picking Arsenal to win the Premier League, the crew talk Olympics and more. Adam Smith later scored Bournemouth’s consolation goal.
“The first thing I can tell you is that his table for breakfast and his table for meals, he is surrounded by the young ones, surrounded by the kids”, Mourinho said.
“But for the team, you have to forget the passport, you have to forget 34 years old, because the body and the mentality is not of a 34-year-old guy”.
