Liverpool tie down defender Sakho with long term contract
Liverpool drew their opening Europa League Group B match against the Ligue 1 side Bordeaux 1-1 at the Matmut Atlantique stadium. However, his impressive performance in the Europa League draw at Bordeaux led to some encouraging comments by manager Brendan Rodgers.
Opposite number Alex Neil believes the level of scrutiny on Rodgers is unfair, but is optimistic that his City team can add to Liverpool’s woes.
In just his second start for the club, 18-year-old midfielder Jordan Rossiter also acquitted himself well. “It’s ensuring that we take those risks in order to create in the game and bring that intensity to the game“.
In light of Liverpool’s recent results, the youthful nature of the team and this being a European away game – it was probably a well won point for Liverpool.
“My approach is what I did in this competition when I first came in”. ‘I was satisfied with the performance, particularly with so numerous young ones’. We played players that needed games and it’s my chance to look at some young players as well.
Both are more than capable enough to handle the Norwich attack, but they will have to pay special attention to the veteran Wes Hoolahan since he already has four assists this season, more than any Liverpool player.
The experienced defender was substituted following a heavy collision with goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in Bordeaux.
Sakho, 25, joined Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in 2013 but has struggled to nail down a regular first team starting spot and had been rumoured to be leaving the club this summer.
“But he’s trained very well and remained very professional, done his extra work on his fitness and you see he has got his rewards for that”.
Adam Lallana’s nutmeg on Pablo and first-time finish deserved to be the matchwinner. So getting over that and trying to develop at the same time is a pretty hard thing to do, and it’s probably of little wonder that he was cramping up prior to his withdrawal.
“I was so proud of them tonight”.
“I was just disappointed we couldn’t get the win but I think a point away from home is good“.
“Liverpool FC are delighted to announce Mamadou Sakho has signed a new long-term contract with the club”, a statement on the Reds’ official site read.
