Lizard Squad hacker draws suspended sentence for online attacks
One member from the Lizard Squad has reportedly been convicted for the DDOS attacks he and his group did on the PSN and Xbox Live services past year.
But despite being part of the Lizard Squad network that has taken credit for major hacking attacks over the last few years, the 17-year-old user – known as “zeekill” – was let off with a slap on the wrist.
The Espoo District Court ruled on hacking incidents including computer tampering involving servers at MIT and Harvard University as well as money laundering conducted to hide the origin of illegally acquired funds, according to a a Finland Times report, which did not name the offender, a minor under Finnish law. He will face a two-year suspended prison sentence and a requirement to speak out against cyber crime.
In December 2014, security journalist Brian Krebs published a post in which he claimed to identify two Lizard Squad members.
Lizard Squad initiated the December 25th attack through denial-of-service (DDos). “He’s harmed American targets and the Federal Bureau of Investigation should have stepped in by now”, Strater told The Daily Dot.
Other charges are said to include data breaches, felony payment fraud, telecommunication harassments, and other violations of company secrets. “The reality is, Julius Kivimaki will never be made to pay for his crimes”. In our exclusive interview with Lizard Squad (which you can read here), they admitted that the motivation behind last years attack was simply done for their amusement at first, until they started pursuing a “real cause” which was to prove that internet giants like Microsoft and Sony cannot protect their customers and therefore cannot be trusted to securely hold private information.
