Local church hosts Dr. King remembrance service
Residents gathered at Town Hall Monday to reflect on the life of Martin Luther King Jr., but they were also urged by town and school officials to continue the civil rights leader’s work by ending racism and striving for economic justice. He says he models after Dr. King’s integrity and faith.
The history of the San Antonio MLK march goes back to mourning after King’s 1968 assassination.
“I really feel deep inside that he did get us freedom outside, but still inside there’s not”, said 14-year-old Eraya Johnson who is president of the local NAACP Youth Council.
Across America, there are hundreds of streets named for civil right’s leader Doctor Martin Luther King Junior.
Turner wants the week of events to show how King did more than just fight racial injustice.
“Martin Luther King is such a big part of the black experience”, said Jennifer Latimore, the Bronzeville Arts Ensemble’s Artistic Associate.
About 100 people gathered Monday morning at the Depot Square and then marched to the Rayne Civic Center, where students shared poetry and songs they had written about King, and other members of the community were invited to share what the day means for them.
She said New Hampshire has helped to lead in the civil rights struggle, from its participation in the Civil War to recognition of gay marriage without a judicial ruling.
Arkansas has formally celebrated Lee’s birthday since 1947. “Remembrance Ceremony”, the gathering aimed to remember King’s sacrifices and contributions to the United States and the world.
The NAACP of Broome and Tioga counties hosted its annual celebration program at Binghamton East Middle School to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
Closing the program, Charles echoed Hunt’s words but with much stronger language.
Monday, many people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and beliefs joined together to celebrate the life and legacy Dr. King left behind. “He was a very kind, and very gentle person”.
“Instead of just giving a regular citation for truancy or curfew, or anything along that line, we try to get a well-rounded picture of what’s going on with the family, and try to get them better services”, Lopez said.
