Local groups react to Snyder refugee decision
“It’s important that there are people in need across the world, and that we’re open to those folk”.
“We are disappointed with the decision, and we are frankly surprised with the decision”, said Jaber.
Rick Snyder, pictured here in July 2013, is among the governors suspending efforts to resettle Syrian refugees. Gov. Snyder highlighted his priority to “protect the safety of our residents” and that state leaders will be in dialogue with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security regarding security and future resettlement efforts.
“He has such an opportunity to do so much good to help so many people who truly are in need by providing them shelter, and allowing them access to our country” said Dr. Farhan Bhatti with the Islamic Center. Worn-torn Syria has produced many refugees fleeing the violence, as well as a few terrorists ready to execute horrific plans for mass murder.
Governor Snyder says the decision is not a permanent one, and that the program is just suspended until the state has a chance to speak with Homeland Security. “States can do things that make themselves attractive or unattractive as destinations for immigrants….But [the state of Michigan] could not, for example, say, ‘We disapprove of the government of Myanmar, and so we boycott Myanmar as MI.’ That’s the federal government’s job, and when states have exhausted to do things like that, the courts have said, ‘No way'”.
At an event in suburban Detroit, Snyder told reporters that he wants to ensure that terrorists are not part of the refugee process. That includes a security clearance, medical screening, and cultural orientation.
