Local lake probed for hard drive in California shootings
One of the attackers who killed 14 people in San Bernardino, Calif., last week, received the assault rifles used in the massacre from a friend to avoid arousing suspicion by purchasing them himself, a law enforcement official said Friday.
The FBI sent divers into a San Bernardino lake in California on Thursday to search for evidence related to the deadly attack carried out last week by apparent terrorist couple Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik.
Investigators have said the killers tried to cover their tracks by destroying emails, cellphones and other items at their home in Redlands. However, it is still not known if Marquez gave or sold the guns to Farook.
Authorities say that no red flags turned up in their background checks on Malik and that questioning of her focused on the legitimacy of her relationship with Farook and whether they planned to marry, as they did previous year after arriving in the U.S. He said authorities were at the lake after learning the attackers may have been there at some point.
But much of the recent attention has shifted to Marquez. However, authorities say that other subjects are being monitored. The dive teams were looking to see if they stored anything there or left, the senior official said.
LOS ANGELES (AP) A search for a computer hard drive and anything else linked to the husband-and-wife shooters who killed 14 in the California terror attacks stretched into the weekend, as specialized divers with the Federal Bureau of Investigation looked through a San Bernardino lake for abandoned evidence.
Marquez has emerged as a central figure in the investigation. Marquez married a Russian woman named Mariya, whose sister is married to Farook’s older brother, in November 2014.
When asked if the shooters had any connections to other individuals who had been radicalized in this country, Sen.
Burr also added there was nothing to indicate that law enforcement should have caught this plot. “Obviously it has to be fail-safe, and that’s what the American people need and deserve”. He later checked into a mental health facility. It’s also unclear which home the officials were talking about.
The timing of the rifle purchases is significant to FBI investigators. Farook also bought one handgun in 2011 and another in 2012, according to law enforcement officials.
In his testimony, Comey said Farook and Malik were inspired by foreign terrorist groups.
Farook worked as an inspector for the county’s environmental health services division.
Farook was self-radicalizing around that time, FBI Director James Comey said, and met Malik soon after, eventually marrying her and bringing her to the United States.
The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group hailed the perpetrators and called them soldiers of the caliphate.
Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said it was his understanding that Malik was subjected to an in-person interview during the application process for a visa, but that he did not have additional details on it. He noted that while there were some indications that might have alerted law enforcement to Farook, he declined to detail what those might have been.
“I don’t know how this happened…” “That doesn’t appear to be the case”.
On Saturday, they were set to search the lake for a third day.
