It’s escapist entertainment at its best. In fact, it’s refreshing to just have focus on the Logan and Xavier characters. They often feature stories with multiple emotional ebbs and flows. But we were also introduced to a not-so-furry anti-hero – Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, arguably the most popular of Marvel’s X-Men up to that point. How fortuitous is that given all the Reynold’s and Jackman haggling that took place? There hasn’t been a new one born in 25 years, and the old ones are dying.
That’s because the 90-odd-year-old Professor X is now suffering from Alzheimer’s and hiding out in Mexico, his brain having been classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the USA government. However, the R rating has another, more salutary effect: As Logan and the professor, who regains a measure of lucidity now that he has another mutant to look after, transport Laura across the country, they can hurl obscenities at each other like a bickering old couple tired of each other’s quirks.
Or is he? A little girl claws her way into his life, and suddenly it’s evil scientists, armed goons and genetically enhanced villains all over again. Wild, violent, capable of massacring a whole battalion of Reavers without the least hesitation, X-23 is nevertheless a kind of small miracle, In this world where most mutants have disappeared. He changes his mind when he learns Laura has been implanted with the same hardware that turned him into Wolverine. Lozano gave the actor a painting of Wolverine done by her brother who passed away, and he posted it on his Facebook page. Most people want to see action and Logan doesn’t disappoint. He even urged fans to lobby Hugh Jackman to return to the role after Logan’s release. (The project just wasn’t working out, scientists wanted to work on something even crazier, yadda, yadda, yadda.) Logan has to drive halfway across the western United States to get Laura to safety. Xavier calls the night one of the best he has had in years, but his happiness is mixed with the sadness from past events. Having lost faith in himself and humanity, Logan is offered one last chance at redemption when a young girl (Dafne Keen) shows up at his door.
“It just felt like it was the right time to do it”, he said in 2015 (via Movie Pilot).
When Wolverine first meets Laura in Logan, she’s hovering around the Mexican border with Gabriella, a nurse who tells Wolverine she is Laura’s mother and needs his help to get to North Dakota.
