London’s outpouring of support for Paris
De Blasio placed flowers under Washington Square Park’s iconic arch where those gathered – including many French nationals – scrawled messages honoring the 129 people killed in Friday’s attacks.
A few two thousand people gathered at an evening vigil yesterday in the capital’s Trafalgar Square, where fountains and the grand portico of the National Gallery opposite were lit to resemble the Tricolour.
Waving French flags, the crowd broke out into stirring renditions of “La Marseillaise”, followed by warm applause.
“We are completely astonished”, the health coach on vacation from Paris said.
“Early this afternoon, I visited the French consulate and expressed, on behalf of the Scottish people, our sympathy and solidarity with the people of France at this awful time”.
Speaking before any British deaths were confirmed, the Prime Minister warned that the United Kingdom should “be prepared for a number of British casualties” as he told the French people: “Your fight is our fight”.
“It’s the least we can do to repay that”, he said. “Not only in Paris but all around the world”.
The outpouring of solidarity generated massive amounts of activity on social media, with the hashtags #prayforparis and #jesuisparis going viral.
“This morning I convened a Scottish Government resilience meeting to ensure that in Scotland we are doing everything we can to provide support for those who may be affected by this senseless attack. All my love and prayers go out to everyone affected by this frightful attack, when will this stop?” Joyandet, who is a French citizen, had who had a peace sign painted on her cheek with Eiffel Tower in the center of it and held a sign that read, “Pray for Paris”. Laurence Moulin, a native of the southern French city of Lyon, said on Saturday the country needs to find a better way of combating racism. A state of emergency has been declared in France after a night of horror in the capital.
– Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari hit out at “barbaric attacks…an unacceptable affront to all human values and civilized norms”.
De Blasio also released a statement saying: “The people of NY City are heartbroken to see our sister city of Paris shaken again by these thoughtless acts of violence, and we stand in solidarity with the residents of Paris and with (Paris Mayor Anne) Hidalgo during this tragic time”.
