Long-time Giants head coach Coughlin steps down
Clearly the question was related to Saints coach Sean Payton (although no names were named), a former Giants offensive coordinator and prime candidate to replace Coughlin should the Saints be willing to let him walk for some light (second round?) compensation.
In his statement, Coughlin also said: “I think it has been evident these last 12 years here how much pride I take in representing this franchise”. He then spent time with the Packers and Giants before becoming the head coach of the Jaguars in 1995. The coach had spoken to the team earlier in the morning and many were saddened by the thought he might not be back.
New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has informed his coaching staff that he will not return for a 13th season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.
As for know we acknowledge the great career of Tom Coughlin. “I’ll always love him for that”. “You’ve gotta manufacture wins in different ways”.
“I feel very comfortable in the offense”, Manning said.
Reese did say “I take full responsibility” for the roster. “He’s going to be straight blunt with it, he’s not going to sugarcoat anything, he’s going to keep it original and that’s what he did”.
With Coughlin making his exit, conversation has turned not just to who will replace him as head coach, but what if anything the organization will do to refresh a front office that hasn’t put a winning product on the field since 2012. They won a Super Bowl together in the 1990 season, before both went elsewhere: Belichick to Cleveland to become the Browns head coach, and Coughlin to Boston College, where he coached the Eagles for three seasons (1991-93) and a 21-13-1 record.
Coughlin came to the Giants in 2004 after Jim Fassel was sacked. The coach can only coach the players he’s given, after all, and the Giants were pretty thin in terms of talent at a lot of positions. Including his time as a head coach in Jacksonville he is 182-156 as an National Football League head coach and his regular-season win total of 170 is 12th in National Football League history. The Giants won in another upset, 21-17. It’s an offer that Coughlin told him that he’d consider, but, again, it was hard to watch Coughlin at the podium on Tuesday and think that there aren’t teams he could still help in the more familiar role as a head coach.
