‘Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies
LOS ANGELES The Dodgers were so annoying at times in their 7-4 win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, they were good. Playing second base, Chase Utley fumbled the ball, then frantically picked it up and heaved it behind his back to first.
A bobble that turns into an incredible backwards flip to Adrian Gonzalez at first base proves that Chase Utley is still not of this planet.
While “The Man” didn’t actually use his glove on this play, it’s absolutely incredible for someone his age to do night in and night out. “He said, ‘I can’t believe I missed the ball.'” Utley called the play “pretty lucky”.
Part of me wants to believe that the 37-year-old bobbled the ball on objective in order to wow us with his jaw-dropping no-look out, but knowing Utley, he really was more frustrated he had to do what he did. Unfortunately, it will be impossible to narrow down just 10 plays to make any kind of Utley/defensive play top 10.
Grandal went 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle on Thursday.
That lead disappeared quickly in the seventh inning. He is 4-6 with a 4.11 ERA in 13 home starts this season.
The Dodgers went on to win the game 7-4 and took another step towards capturing another NL West crown.
Anderson actually cruised through the first inning, but ran into trouble in the second.
NOTES: SS Corey Seager is the first Dodger to score 100 runs in a season since Matt Kemp in 2011.
Luis Avilan (3-0) got the win in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.
In two August starts after recovering from preseason back surgery, Anderson failed to last more than three innings or allow fewer than five runs. Brett Anderson takes the hill, and he’s 0-2 with a 24.75 ERA and one strikeout this season.
“In the ‘pen I thought he was going to have a really good game”, Grandal said of Anderson. After a sacrifice bunt by Chatwood, Charlie Blackmon drove in Dahl with an infield single, leaving the Rockies with a 3-0 lead. A single put runners on the corners and a walk loaded the bases. Rockies second baseman D.J. Lemahieu, who leads the National League in batting average, answered with a solo shot of his own in the fifth inning. Closer Kenley Jansen struck out two and recorded his 46th save with a ideal ninth.
