Los Angeles launches 2024 Olympics bid
The U.S. Olympic Committee selected Los Angeles Tuesday as the nation’s candidate to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, about an hour after the City Council voted 15-0 to back the bid. Garcetti, bid chairman Casey Wasserman and U.S. Olympic leaders wrapped up their initial pitch in Lausanne, Switzerland Thursday. Los Angeles, which would be Toronto’s North American competition, has unanimously voted to put in a bid. The council will also take into account presentations from the L.A. ’84 Foundation regarding the legacy the 1984 Olympics left on the city and the effects it had on the local economy.
“I think it’s time for America to bring the Olympics back home”.
“And because we’ve had the last couple of weeks to do what is essentially a year of work to really solidify that this was something Los Angeles wanted to do and that the United States wants to do, and I think we were able to achieve that in a face-to-face meeting in a way that isn’t done over the phone”. “It is an honor for any city to host the Olympic Games, and Los Angeles is uniquely prepared for this task”.
A so-called host metropolis contract, which primarily sticks the town and state – not the International Olympic Committee – with the burden of any value overruns, turned an impediment in Boston, which was dropped from rivalry in late July amid shaky public help and questions on taxpayer spending and legal responsibility.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Los Angeles as our USA bid city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games”, said Blackmun.
“That is the engagement, not the marriage”, Council President Herb Wesson stated.
“The Canadian Olympic Committee has been crystal clear in its intention to lead, advocate and prepare for a possible 2024 Toronto Olympic bid”.
A 2014 report prepared by Ernst and Young estimated that the cost of submitting a formal bid to host the 2024 Olympics would be between $50 million and $60 million but on Tuesday Tory said he believes changes to the rules governing the bidding process may have lowered that cost.
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie, meanwhile, said in a statement her city will not support a Toronto bid until studying a “comprehensive business case”. If selected, Los Angeles would join London as the second three-time host city.
The “extraordinarily secretive” people behind Toronto’s potential bid for the 2024 Olympic need to stand up and identify themselves, one expert says.
Wasserman, whose group is spearheading the Los Angeles campaign, was upbeat about today’s talks.
“We very much look forward to a partnership with L.A., which is very, very strong”. Playing on a small outside court in the shadow of the massive Arthur Ashe Stadium that provided the stage 14 years earlier for the brash Australian’s win over Pete Sampras in the US Open final, Hewitt typically appeared up for a fight.
The bid requires constructing a $1 billion athletes village on a rail yard the town does not personal, and authorities analysts have warned that creating the location might considerably exceed the projected value.
