Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies fatally shoot armed man
After the gunfire ceases, the man is seen crawling on the ground away from the officers, who open fire on him again. Deputies continued to shoot after Roberts was crawling on the ground, the video showed.
The video footage, which starts seconds before the officers open fire, does not appear to show the main aiming at officers, but rather shows cops following him as he walks away from them. He died at the scene.
The chaotic scene unfolded near a gas station, putting several civilians in danger.
Police caution the public to look beyond the cell phone video footage of Robertson’s shooting and to consider the full investigation into the shooting as it is completed.
Two sheriff’s deputies fired their weapons at least 25 times and a man – reportedly wielding a gun – was killed Saturday in Lynwood outside Los Angeles. Robertson crosses the street to the gas station, where he is shot dead. The suspect was not believed to have fired his gun toward deputies.
“The weapon was recovered from directly beneath him”, Capt. Steve Katz of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said. Several calls updating the suspect’s location were also received, including calls that described the suspect as a “male Black with a handgun wearing a checkered shirt”. The first call came in at 10:53 a.m.
Katz said that Robertson refused officer’s orders to drop his weapon even after having been shot.
“Public safety was critical here”, he said, adding that there were people on the street, including some at a gas station where Robertson was walking to.
At a press conference on Sunday, officials said the suspect’s name is Nicholas Robertson, a 28-year-old from Compton.
The camera then panned back to two deputies, who both had arms raised and were pointing guns in the man’s direction. Katz said witnesses reported he fired six to seven shots in the air and briefly went into a vehicle wash and a pizza parlor before the deputies arrived.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell said Robertson had “prior contact with the criminal justice system” but was not specific.
The shooting comes amid heightened national scrutiny into complaints of deadly force and excessive force used by law enforcement. Police were responding to a stabbing report when they encountered Woods.
Earlier this year, a report from the Los Angeles County Inspector General found that the LASD in particular lacked transparency related to deputy-involved shootings. Other agencies will be joining the investigation in the coming weeks.
Relatives who saw the video said the shooting seemed unjustified to them. He said Robertson might have had some type of “domestic discord” with his spouse that prompted his actions but did not provide details. What?? They could have Tased him.
“They shot him”, Tracy Brown, a relative of the suspect’s wife, told the Los Angeles Times.
The man’s sister, Precious Bradford, told KABC that the deputies should face prison time for killing her brother. They say Robertson was armed with a gun.
