Los Angeles steps up at U.S. candidate for 2024
The U.S. Olympic Committee selected Los Angeles Tuesday as the nation’s candidate to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, about an hour after the City Council voted 15-0 to back the bid.
The city of Los Angeles has begun its campaign to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
“We know the global competition is going to be strong”, Blackmun said.
“The focus needs to be on convincing the 55 or so International Olympic Committee members that Los Angeles is the best city to host the Olympics”. “On the other hand the city council members seem fully committed to this”.
There is no guarantee the 2024 Olympics will wind up in Los Angeles.
City Council Mike Bonin has argued that the USOC should put the bid forward without a risky contract, as had been done for the 1984 bid. No American city has hosted a Summer Olympics since Atlanta in 1996.
Mayor Garcetti reached an agreement with the USOC later that day and at a reception attended by former Olympians and other celebrities said, “This city is built for this quest”. Toronto and Baku, Azerbaijan are also considering bids.
“We stand on the threshold of a new era in Olympic history”, Blackmun said, adding that the goal is to hold the games “without burdening the citizens with debt”.
Hamburg: Not as sexy as the City of Light or the Eternal City, but remember this: International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach is German.
LA24, the nonprofit set up to pursue the Los Angeles bid, last week issued a detailed 200-page draft bid book which bullishly projected the games could deliver a surplus despite a $US4.6 billion price tag.
“We exchanged lists of things that would have to be covered by negotiations”.
Ryu said that while he and his constituents are excited about the prospect of the Olympics coming to Los Angeles, “there are a lot of projects and a lot of unanswered questions, not just about financing, but about community input …”
LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, the public face of the nonprofit, insisted during the Santa Monica news conference that there’s no risk in hosting, saying the Olympics and Paralympic games “aren’t a gamble”.
The worldwide Olympic Committee will vote on the victor in the summer of 2017. His first item was the financial commitment, if any, of the city.
“This is the engagement not the wedding-and now we’re in the prenup stages”, council leader Herb Wesson said.
The “joinder” agreement approved by the City Council Tuesday was requested by the USOC, which has a September 15 deadline to submit a proposed US bid city to the IOC.
William Yu, an economist at UCLA Anderson Forecast, said he thinks hosting the Olympics can leave behind much-needed housing and improved bus and train systems.
Paris is the current favorite if only because of its popularity as a tourist destination and the fact that 2024 would mark 100 years since it last hosted the Olympics.
