Louis to host first U.S. World Cup qualifier
The U.S. team will play with its first qualifier for that 2018 World Cup at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on November 13, along with the play-off for your Confederations Cup is likely to be placed at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Florida.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be playing our first World Cup qualifier towards Russian Federation 2018 in St. Louis”, U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement.
The match will be part of the penultimate round of North American regional qualifying for the 2018 Russian Federation World Cup, which will see three groups of four teams reduced to six finalists who will then compete in the “Hexagonal” round robin to determine berths in Russian Federation. It’s the USA’s first World Cup qualifier in St. Louis since 1989.
The last time the U.S. men’s national team played in St. Louis was in a friendly match with Paraguay in 1997. The USMNT plays the victor of St. Vincent & The Grenadines vs Aruba, a two-leg series on September 4 and 8. Group C concludes with a double match day in September of 2016 with the victor of St. Vincent & The Grenadines hosting the USMNT on the 2 and the USMNT hosting Trinidad & Tobago on the 6.
The Cardinals announced Sunday that their stadium will be used for the game November 13. The women’s team played there in April, drawing more than 35,000 for a win over New Zealand. “We’re incredibly excited to be the host for this match and are looking forward to showing that we have some of the best soccer fans in the country”.
The U.S. won the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup and finished fourth this year, losing to Jamaica in the semifinals, 2-1, and to Panama in the third-place game, 3-2 on penalty kicks, after overtime ended in a 1-1 tie.
