Louis Van Gaal: “Don’t boo the players, boo me”
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has told the club’s fans to boo him if they are frustrated with the club’s tactics, and not the players.
A thumping header from Wayne Rooney ended Manchester United’s scoring drought and secured a 1-0 Champions League victory over CSKA Moscow as they went top of Group B on Tuesday.
Loud boos rang out around Old Trafford when Van Gaal replaced Martial with Fellaini in the 66th minute and the home support then yelled “We’re Man Utd, we want to attack”.
Asked about Rooney’s best position in United’s press conference ahead of their clash with West Brom this weekend, Van Gaal had the following to say.
Since then the Old Trafford outfit failed to score in three games they featured in the Premiership.
“Criticism (from) the fans is never unfair, and you can not criticise the feeling of the fans”.
Van Gaal said he was happy how the team performed defensively and offensively against CSKA. “You can also decide to stay and not play and train – a lot of players are doing that, but I have a great respect for these players”.
Otherwise van Gaal has no fresh injury worries to contend with.
Schweinsteiger said he hoped the floodgates would now open for Rooney, starting with their Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. “If two teams attack it is easier”. “He is expected to win every game and he has to win with a few style”.
“For me, what he (Scholes) said doesn’t bother me”.
“But intelligent players adapt and there’s no doubting Rooney has a very good footballing brain”.
“I think we have attacked for 85 minutes of the 90 minutes, so we have given a lot of entertainment and it’s dependable of the goals”.
“I think when you play for Manchester United you believe that you have to be top of the league”.
“In my first year as a coach with Ajax all the fans were shouting for Johan Cruyff until we won the UEFA Cup”.
“It is hard to disorganise a team that has 10 people defending behind the ball, you have to take that into account always”.
