Louis van Gaal fumes over Manchester United exit talk
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal angrily derided the latest reports about his future after his team were pegged back in injury time in a 1-1 draw at Chelsea.
United had the better of the first 70 minutes at Stamford Bridge and led through Jesse Lingard’s excellent goal, only for Diego Costa to equalise in added time.
“You haven’t spoken with (executive vice-chairman) Ed Woodward or (owners) the Glazers, and you are inventing a story”.
United head to Stamford Bridge on Sunday five points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal but Van Gaal believes his team have turned a corner after a disastrous December and believes they can still secure a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League. Then we did not keep the ball in the way I think we have to.
Van Gaal has clashed with reporters several times already this season, notably at the end of January when he rubbished claims that he had offered to resign as United manager in the wake of a 1-0 English Premier League defeat to Southampton. I have to say that you are getting the sack tomorrow.
“I can not believe that it is true, because I have seen what has happened here over the last two months”.
“No, I am not enjoying it. I can have my family, I can have my friends, I can have my quiet life, which I also like, and I can have my football”. We have to improve in that way. “Of course, I shall say to my players that it was a fantastic performance until the last quarter, I have said that already, but we have to reward ourselves because it is not the first time this has overcome us”. We were unlucky that we got the goal against us, it was unbelievable.
United goalkeeper David de Gea initially thwarted Chelsea’s quest for an equaliser, Van Gaal hailing his “remarkable” saves from Branislav Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas, only for Costa to strike at the death.
Chelsea’s French centre-back Kurt Zouma will undergo scans on Monday after being stretchered off with what Hiddink feared was a “very bad” hyperextended right knee.
“There has been such nonsense created about me”, said Van Gaal, whose side were due to visit Chelsea in the Premier League later on Sunday.
“We controlled the game even though the level of the individual players is very high in Chelsea, and Manchester United haven’t won here for three years, so it is not so easy”.
“It’s an awesome place to live, awesome for them to study and search for their future, and for the family to be together”.
