Louisiana Cop Shot in Head, Drivers Subdue Suspect
That driver wrestled the shotgun away from Daigle, and, with the others, got him to the ground, and snapped Vincent’s handcuffs on his wrists, Edmonson said.
According to USA Today, Senior Trooper Steven Vincent “was shot in the head and then taunted when he stopped to provide aid to a man whose truck was stuck in a ditch”.
“You might hear him respiration, telling him, ‘You are fortunate”. “I was on top of him and I called 911”.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is working a homicide in the 1400 block of Holly Vale Road in Moss Bluff that may have a connection to the man accused of killing a state trooper Sunday afternoon, Sheriff Tony Mancuso said. “That man’s acquired a gun, ‘” LeDoux advised The Related Press as he recounted the way it was that he ended up tackling and capturing the gunman on Sunday.
“We do have information to believe that he (Daigle) was a resident at that location, maybe not permanently, but at least staying with him (the second victim)”, the sheriff said.
Both Daigle and the trooper who was shot are white, he said. One of his brothers was a police chief in Iowa, Louisiana, and another brother is a state trooper.
At that point in the video, Edmonson said, “I saw a shotgun blast”. “That’s why they tell them to step out of the vehicle … because these things happen”, Edmonson said.
Daigle is being held at the Calcasieu Parish Jail.
Vincent – the first Louisiana trooper to be killed in a hostile encounter since Trooper Donald Cleveland was murdered near Lafayette in 1977 – had a lifelong dream of becoming a trooper and joined the Louisiana State Police in 2003.
Vincent died Monday morning.
Sergeant James Anderson, southwest Louisiana spokesman for State Police, described Vincent as an optimistic, positive person with a sharp mind and a love for the New Orleans Saints football team.
Vincent, a veteran trooper, is married and a father of one. “He threatened my son, threatened to burn his house down with his kids in it”, Diane Daigle said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Steven’s family and all of our law enforcement members as we mourn this tragic loss”, Jindal wrote in a prepared statement.
Edmonson said Daigle had “numerous DWIs” and other arrests, but didn’t know the specifics behind them.
The incident was caught on a dashboard camera video, which isn’t being released at this time, police said. The trooper got to the truck at 2:43pm, Anderson said.
Instead of leaving, LeDoux said: “I took off running”. Edmonson says all four are heroes.
Edmonson said several passing motorists stopped and struggled with Daigle. “You should go, ‘” LeDoux recalled.
LeDoux did not speak at the news conference. Edmonson shook hands with him and then hugged him.
A friend and colleague of Vincent’s, state police Sgt. “He sees the truck in the ditch and he radios in that he’s making the traffic stop”.
“He embodied what it means to be a Louisiana State Trooper”, Edmonson said at a news conference this morning.
