Love III wins 21st PGA Tour title
In the midst of a five-hole stretch in which he was 6-under-par, Davis Love III had to take a bathroom break.
But the man can still play. Though Love III is a great driver of the golf ball, it showed you don’t have to be in the 20something crowd to still win.
The 51-year-old Davis Love III proved on Sunday that age can be just a number.
Love knew that if his body was willing his mind and game were still up to the task, as evidenced by his play this week at Sedgefield Country Club where he averaged 303 yards off the tee and hit 56 of 72 greens in regulation.
After bogeying his first hole, Love got hot.
The former world No1 fell short of a first title since 2013 at the Wyndham Championship at the weekend, but he put himself in a position to win and on the whole performed admirably.
“To have your name thrown out there with Sam Snead is incredible”, Love said, smiling. “For some reason, this tournament has been good to guys in my age group“.
Love came to Greensboro this year having missed the cut in the PGA Championship and 186th on the FedEx Cup points list. Woods doesn’t qualify for the HSBC Champions WGC event in November. “In many ways he is much improved since his terrible start to the year, but the chipping issue remains and seems more psychological than technical”.
Woods didn’t compete for another two months, announcing at the last-minute that he would return to the Phoenix Open, site of his epic ace in 1997 and host city of Super Bowl XLIX being played that week.
A triple-bogey derailed his hopes of winning the Wyndham Championship, and four birdies over the closing six holes for his best finish of 2015 were little consolation.
South African Charl Schwartzel carded a 66 for 265 where he was joined by England’s Paul Casey (67) and American Scott Brown (68).
He said he applied for the coaching job at Pepperdine University, his alma mater, but did not get it. Yet he hesitated about committing to Wyndham, saying “I’ll go through it with my team, we’ll talk about it, what I need to do and see if that’s the right move or not”.
As CBS Sports reports, it wasn’t all bad for Woods.
Now he’s headed to the FedEx Cup playoffs, winners-only Kapalua, the Masters and the Players, among other perks.
He made a mess of the hole, taking a 7, then bogeyed the next one as well before settling down to make those three straight birdies to shoot even-par 70. Just like that he was 16-under and in the lead. He finished at 17-under 263. It was sit-and-wait time. I just wasn’t able to get any kind of roll early.
Yet as Gore stood quietly in a shady spot on the back side of the Plainfield Country Club clubhouse on Tuesday afternoon – still sweating through his shirt from playing a practice round for this week’s Barclays – one by one, fellow players kept stopping to congratulate him.
“I did a really good job (of) not looking at leaderboards”. “You just wonder if the body is going to wear out”.
Brooks Koepka, Bill Haas, Carl Pettersson and Webb Simpson were in a tie for sixth, three shots back, after closing out their tournaments on 14-under.
