LSU fails to defeat the Gators in nail-biting finish
By leading wounded but risky Florida past LSU in the payback victory of the year 16-10, McElwain has steered the Gators back to the SEC Championship Game for the second time in his first two seasons in Gainesville.
The game marked a long-awaited contest, after the original date of October 8 was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. There’s no guarantee that Williams would’ve gained enough yards for the first down, but he isn’t a one-tackler runner, so it was conceivable. “I am just happy we got the win”.
Florida will average less than four yards per carry.
The Tigers’ troubles weren’t limited to the red zone.
With 5 trips inside the Gators 10 yard line, LSU finished with a touchdown, turnover, botched field goal attempt, field goal, and a turnover on downs.
Earlier reports indicated Fournette would not be available.
The Gators’ best feature in the first half, however, was their special teams play. Few gave the Boys from Old Florida a shot.
Nick Chubb ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for Georgia (7-4).
The two teams scuffled near the middle of the field about an hour before kickoff.
LSU had a chance to tie and win it with an extra point in the final seconds. Congratulations Florida Gators, you earned it. In the 3rd quarter, Josh Growden could not handle a snap on a field goal try which prevented the Tigers from taking a 10-3 lead. Instead, the halftime score was 7-3 in favor of the Tigers. He last spoke to the media after a game following his school-record 284-yard performance against Ole Miss.
With just three seconds to play in a showdown with LSU, the Gators came up with a fourth-down stop of the Tigers’ Derrius Guice on the 1-yard line, causing a fumble and sealing a 16-10 win.
While Florida has the second best rushing defense in the conference, they’ll be without key personnel.
Because if that happens and if Tennessee beats the woeful Missouri and Vandy next week, the only way the Gators go to the SEC Championship Game is if they buy tickets.
Cleveland was isolated against cornerback Donte Jackson but he leapt, twisted away from the attempted tackle and raced the rest of the way. A methodical drive that began at the LSU 16 reached first-and-goal for the Florida 4 before a one-yard gain, a sack and a short completion led to a 22-yard field goal.
Special teams proved the difference in this game. Despite missing two games, it was technically a three-game absence for Fournette as the Tigers had a game postponed against Florida in between due to Hurricane Matthew.
Yet it was a defensive and running display up until the end.
ROAD WOES: Still looking for a signature road win, Florida coach McElwain is prepared for the worst in Baton Rouge. However, at the goal on third down, fullback J.D. Moore was stuffed. The Gators had been buried deep in their own territory for most of the game against Ed Orgeron’s dominant LSU defense.
With the offense struggling to get going, the Crimson Tide (11-0) spotted the Mocs (8-3) the game’s first three points and didn’t really shake them until late in the third quarter.
