LSU RB Leonard Fournette plays vs. Gators after pregame scuffle
No. 23 Florida beat No. 16 LSU, 16-10, on Saturday afternoon, and they did it in pretty exciting fashion. They have an interim head coach in Ed Orgeron who could have solidified his job for next season with a win, but now has no idea what will happen in the coming months. But they beat SC last week, and they got the stop at the goal line they needed to go back to Atlanta, where they’ll face a monumental challenge against the Crimson Tide (after a nonconfence game with Florida State next week).
Florida’s Eddy Pineiro made two fourth quarter field goals of 26 and 34 yards, the later following an LSU fumble on a kickoff.
It was a tough loss for the Tigers (6-4, 4-3) to take.
Orgeron said Fournette gave him no indication the scuffle had anything to do with his decision.
The first half was a true defensive display for LSU. Guice accounted for 40 yards and punched in the touchdown from one yard out.
Nick Chubb ran for 108 yards and a touchdown for Georgia (7-4). On the next play Guice charged for a 4-yard gain, but Sherit and linebacker David Reese helped keep the LSU tailback a yard short of the goal line. The drive was highlighted by a 29-yard pass to Guice from Etling on 2nd-and-10 at the LSU 20.
In all reality, a 7-4 record isn’t all that bad considering the circumstances surrounding the program this year and considering that Miles was actually kept around in recent years while putting up similar win-loss records.
“It was the turning point of the game”, Orgeron said. “Up 7-3, go up 14-3 with the great defense we have, we can do some things to move the football and take care of the clock”.
After the game, LSU receiver D.J.
Etling came out firing in the second half. “The way we look at it, this was actually supposed to be a home game, so we’ll end the season undefeated in The Swamp”. If not for that, LSU could have forced overtime with a field goal. “I’m more proud of the way that when we needed to run the ball late, it was sweet”. We just going to come whoop y’all in y’all’s stadium. Yes, it had 13 goal-to-go plays beginning with a first and goal at the Florida 7-yard line in the second quarter.
LSU starting defensive back Donte Jackson was in coverage on Appleby’s long scoring pass down the right sideline to Cleveland, who then escaped Jackson’s grasp after the catch near midfield.
It’s not simply because the Gators were supposed to host LSU this season before Hurricane Matthew blew ashore in October.
The Tigers should’ve passed the ball in final series: LSU had a good drive to get down to Florida’s seven-yard line in the final seconds.
On two of the other ones they had a fumble and a botched snap on a field goal. LSU’s leading tackler Kendell Beckwith left the field last week so that leaves Duke Riley as the top tackler with 81, jamal Adams has 65 tackles, and Arden Key has 10 sacks.
“It just shows that coach [Jim McElwain,] he has a good plan for us”, Tabor said. The Tigers had some success moving the ball, as did the Gators, but miscues from LSU and defensive stands from Florida allowed this game to come down to the very last seconds of play. On the ensuing punt, LSU almost forced a turnover when a ball came extremely close to brushing off of a Florida player, but a replay review determined no Gators had touched the football.
Running backs: Not only did he fumble in the red zone, but Guice was also denied a game-tying touchdown on the final play of the game. “We came into their place and handled business”.
