LSU’s Leonard Fournette not expected to play against Florida
Florida’s victory also ended a lot of drama between the two teams that began when the originally scheduled game at Florida was canceled because of Hurricane Matthew on October 8. The Gators are 7-2, while the Tigers are 6-3. Here’s hoping that Leonard Fournette is able to play 15 years in the NFL and become just as dominant a player for whatever team that takes a chance on him in the 2017 NFL Draft as he was for the LSU Tigers. Throughout the rescheduling process, another level of bitterness was added to the rivalry, which will be on full display Saturday afternoon. Players from the two teams got into a pre-game scuffle in Baton Rouge. Even though the Gators are down key players – McElwain admitted he’s never been part of a team that’s seen so many important players go down in a two-week span – he sees younger players energized at the opportunity to play and injured starters staying involved and helping them develop.
Scarlett was confident in the defense that gave up 426 yards on the day, but just two scores on six tries in the red zone. That’s pretty good but not significantly better than the type of seasons Miles was compiling: solid records but no marquee victories that would actually put LSU in contention for conference titles and College Football Playoff berths.
With 5 trips inside the Gators 10 yard line, LSU finished with a touchdown, turnover, botched field goal attempt, field goal, and a turnover on downs.
This was the type of play that Florida would need to go their way to be able to upset No. 16 LSU on the road.
Sophomore Jordan Scarlett had a nice game for Florida as he gained 108 yards on 22 carries and showed the ability to break tackles. Jordan Scarlett ran 20 times for a career-high 134 yards against SC last week, clearly moving in front of true freshman Lamical Perine, fumble-prone Mark Thompson and disgruntled backup Jordan Cronkrite. One fourth down stop to end the game. The Gators are third in the nation in defense, but LSU is 13th, which isn’t bad either. Yes, Malachi Dupree will be lined up at receiver for LSU, but he’ll be lined up against arguably the best corners in the country.
With Kentucky’s consecutive losses, and Tennessee’s wins over Kentucky and Florida, the Vols had worked their way back into SEC East contention. Fun fact: Appleby was Danny Etling’s backup at Purdue in 2014. Who would have thought that given where this crew was on Saturday morning?
Florida’s rush defense going up against LSU’s vaunted rushing attack will be the deciding factor in Saturday’s game.
