LSU to retain Ed Orgeron as coach
The other camp claiming anything less than a big-time hire like Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher or Houston’s Tom Herman is a total failure that should result in firing LSU athletic director Joe Alleva.
This decision also sets in motion Herman becoming Texas’ next head coach.
It is about his home state and its 123-year-old flagship college football program.
Then this morning, it was reported that Herman was hired at Texas to replace the recently departed Charlie Strong.
“Growing up in the state of Louisiana, watching the Tigers play, we get it”, said Orgeron, who is only the third Louisiana native to coach the Tigers since LSU joined the Southeastern Conference in 1933.
“I think the world of Dave Aranda. It’s the benchmark. We understand it and it will drive us forward”. People are going to come after him. The perception among the national media, opposing fans and numerous Tigers faithful is that Orgeron was a backup plan to Herman. “The opportunity to come back to Texas is a dream come true for me and my family, and I can’t thank President Fenves and Mike Perrin enough for providing me with this incredible opportunity”, Herman said in a press release. “He hasn’t mentioned anything about that to me. Here we are three weeks later, and we are unranked (in College Football Playoff rankings)”, Knight said.
Orgeron took over for Miles in September after a 2-2 start for the Tigers.
Orgeron is aware of that and appears ready to take on the challenge, as evidenced by his closing comments: “We are going to be judged by one game and I embrace it”. “He is the best coordinator in football”. We plan to fix those pieces so we can get that job accomplished.
Multiple media outlets, citing anonymous sources, say that LSU’s interim head coach Ed Orgeron will be the head coach.
Ed Orgeron is the 33rd head coach in LSU’s football history.
One of Orgeron’s first moves will be to pursue Alabama’s Kiffin as his offensive coordinator, according to reports. Aranda just completed the first year of a three-year contract at LSU. The Crimson Tide won it all past year even though Kirby Smart did double duty before the national championship game in his dual roles as the Alabama defensive coordinator and Georgia head coach.
“He is a mature, veteran coach that has learned over the course of time from numerous great mentors and has taken the good qualities from mentors and assembled them into what he wants to do”, Alleva said.
OR served as the Tigers recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach prior to his promotion as interim coach, and he has continued to build relationships with top prospects as he transitioned into a new role four games into the season. “It wasn’t even his staff”, Alleva said. Six times in 2015 LSU’s defense help opponents to fewer than 100 yards rushing in a game, including limiting Mississippi State to 43 yards in the season-opener and Texas Tech to 29 in the Texas Bowl. Only Ole Miss (21) and Texas A&M (39) scored more than 20 points against the Tigers in their 11 games.
“I feel very confident that he’s going to be able to deliver on 90 percent of the names he presented to me”, Alleva added after the news conference on Saturday. “So when you have a guy like that, you’ve got to try to keep him, and we’re going to do everything to try to keep him”.
