Lucchino stepping down from position with Red Sox
The balance of power in the Boston Red Sox front office is about to shift, as Larry Lucchino has announced that he will be stepping down as president and CEO at the end of the season, according to a report from the Boston Herald.
Over his 13-year tenure with the Red Sox, beginning in 2002, Lucchino played a crucial role in revamping beloved Fenway Park into one capable of keeping up with the new-age features which other ballparks around the nation have adopted.
Lucchino arrived in Boston in 2002 and along with Henry and Chairman Tom Werner, has led the Red Sox to three World Series titles.
Lucchino, per Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, offered insight into the simple reason, saying, “I’ll be 70 in September. He’s certainly my choice, as well as that of John and Tom, to be promoted to the position of president”. “He will have less of an everyday role but he will continue to have an important strategic role not just with the Red Sox but also within Major League Baseball”.
“The truth is Sam is an important part of this puzzle”, said Lucchino. His departure will leave a significant void to be filled, but also allow for fresh young executives to be given the chance to step up.
“There’s been a longstanding transition plan in place for when Larry was ready to take a step back from the day to day”, Kennedy told the Boston Herald.
If the new ownership of the Pawtucket Red Sox want to build a new stadium in Providence, a number of questions need to be answered. I grew up a mile from Fenway and I fully embrace the responsibility that will come with this opportunity.
Ian Browne of MLB.com reported that, according to sources, Lucchino would like to remain involved with the Red Sox in some capacity.
His role with the Red Sox this season has been diminished at least in part because of a motorcycle accident in the winter. As a founding executive, Sam helped create Fenway Sports Management and his vision and leadership have been instrumental in establishing it as one of the world’s most respected leading sports and entertainment marketing agencies.
