Luis Enrique: Is this the best Barcelona in history?
The Catalans had a lot to live up to after thrashing arch rivals Real Madrid 4-0 at the Bernabeu last weekend and then blitzing Roma 6-1 on Tuesday.
Messi has scored 44 goals in 2015, with Suarez also contributing 40 to the 125 goals accrued by the world’s most feared front line.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has hailed the efforts of his star attacking trio Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, and claims none of them are satisfied with their performance until they have all found the back of the net.
Saturday’s La Liga fixture resulted in another 4-0 win; Neymar scored twice while Suarez netted a sublime improvised volley.
Neymar continued his devastating run of form with another two goals against Sociedad, which extended his lead at the top of the La Liga scoring charts.
“It’s odd that a team like Real, which played a great match, gave up four goals”.
Yet despite the way that they have been crushing sides recently, Luis Enrique feels that Barca are still not at their peak.
“What interests me is to see that the team is at a very high level”, he said.
“In a sport like this, there are always things you can improve, we are in a good moment and we have to hold on to that… but the best is still to come”, he warned.
Neymar has confirmed that he is in talks with Barcelona over a new contract as it is “my intention is to sign a renewal”.
Neymar now heads La Liga’s pichichi top scorer race with 14 goals, with Suarez in second on 12, current holder Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid joint-fourth with eight, and Messi well back on just four strikes after missing two months of the season with a knee injury.
Luis Enrique’s team has won nine of its last 10 games to go with one draw in the Copa del Rey that it played with reserve players.
“Players become stronger when they win titles”.
“We know that every player has to fulfil their expectations”, Suarez said.
“We have never said that ourselves and it has been proved”, Messi said. In the first half, Gerónimo Rulli was able to make a good save to stop Suarez’s shot, but this was not to be the last time he was called into action.
