Luis Severino: Yankees-Jays Matchup Postponed

Despite playing meaningful baseball in September, there are still New York Yankees rumors circulating about the offseason. Each team still has at least one series against every other team in the American League East. Here’s the remaining schedule, after this weekend, for each team.

While the ability of Alex Rodriguez to carry the New York Yankees to the MLB championship is highly debated upon, the skills of rookie Luis Severino have been widely commended in the league. The Yankees were certainly interested in Price at the deadline, and that interest will likely only grow when they don’t have to part ways with a top prospects to get him in free agency.

Those Yankees entered the series 2 1/2 games out and won the first game, coming back from a three-run deficit with six-run seventh.

“It’s not ideal for your pitching”, manager Joe Girardi said after Thursday’s game was called because of inclement weather. I know we have a chance to accomplish something here.’ At the same time, I have to be in control. This weekend’s matchups might not have the same stakes as a playoff series, but the importance of these four games can’t be overstated.

The loser of the division could be headed to the one-game wild-card playoff, an outcome Girardi hopes to avoid. “I have not sensed it in the room”, Girardi said.

-1B Mark Teixeira made an appearance in the clubhouse and briefly spoke to the media about the condition of the bone bruise on his right shin.

“To stand here and say this isn’t an important series, I’d be lying”, said Troy Tulowitzki. Having started only once since fouling a ball off his leg on August. 17 and using crutches to get around, Teixeira still thinks he’s going to play again this season.

The Blue Jays would obviously love to keep Price, but it is going to be expensive to do so.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Marco Estrada will start the first game and Marcus Stroman will make his season debut in the nightcap. That marginally benefits the Blue Jays, who lead the division by a game and a half, because doubleheaders historically tend to be split, including nine out of 16 this year.

Severino (3-2, 2.04 ERA) will face Toronto for the second time this season.

With Mark Buehrle, scheduled to start on Tuesday in Atlanta with eight days of rest, recovering from a cortisone injection to his ailing left shoulder and with Drew Hutchison’s year-long struggles beyond fix at this point in the season, the club suddenly has only three sure things in the rotation. He’s done it three times with a 3.38 ERA and 0.80 WHIP, each of which is better than his ERA and WHIP when he’s pitched on more rest.
