Luis Severino: Yankees to roll with six-man rotation for now
He threw 62 pitches. Top prospect Luis Severino has been filling in for Pineda for the past few weeks and he’s pitched so well that it’s hard to imagine the Yankees removing him from the rotation, and he doesn’t deserve to lose his spot either. With his fourth career complete game, Tanaka improved to 5-2 with a 3.10 ERA over his past seven starts. The extra day of rest in between starts should keep all of the Yankees’ hurlers fresh for the stretch run.
He has made eight starts for the local nine over the last two seasons, including six when he was coming back from shoulder surgery in 2013. 240 against him. Sabathia didn’t fare as well against the Twins this week, but he only gave up one home run.
Yankees’ righty Michael Pineda is scheduled to pitch in the big leagues Wednesday for the first time since July 24, manager Joe Girardi said Saturday morning.
Earlier in the year, Girardi dismissed the notion of the Yankees going to a six-man rotation because of a lack of roster flexibility, but when asked about it this week, Girardi acknowledged it as a possibility. The season is winding down and the Yankees only have three off days remaining between now and October, not to mention the fact that nearly the entire rotation has injury concerns.
Teixeira still not ready: Mark Teixeira sat out a second straight game because a deep bone bruise in his right left just below the knee.
Rest for A-Rod Girardi gave Alex Rodriguez, who posted a.159/.275/.290 slash line the previous 18 games, the day off, using Brian McCann, who homered in the first, as the DH instead. He was pulled from that game and hasn’t played since.
