Luis Suarez’s missed Uruguay chances ‘not a sin’ – Oscar Tabarez
Salah’s absence came as a surprise after coach Hector Cuper had said on Thursday he was nearly 100 percent certain to play.
The Group A encounter featured few good chances for either side before a late surge from Uruguay culminated in Gimenez’s 89th-minute victor.
Egypt will face hosts Russian Federation on Tuesday and Saudi Arabia on June 25.
Luis Suarez will be chasing redemption on Friday when Uruguay face Egypt in his first World Cup appearance since being thrown out of the tournament in 2014 for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.
Egypt, which had zero corner kicks in the match, has yet to win a World Cup game.
However, Aleksandr Yardoshvili, the team doctor for Russian club Dinamo Moscow, told Sport Express that based on the video he believes the World Cup is over for Dzagoev, who has a history of hamstring injuries.
The 1-0 defeat in Ekaterinburg was the first World Cup match for The Pharaohs since they fell to England by the same scoreline during the Italy-hosted 1990 tournament.
Tabarez praised his side’s performance while calling on them to improve in their next game against Saudi Arabia.
It may come as a worrying sign as Egypt turn to their next group game against hosts Russian Federation.
Egypt have failed to score in each of their last three World Cup matches.
Having been selected for Russian Federation 2018, the veteran overtook the previous record – set by 43-year-old Faryd Mondragon in Brazil four years ago – as the oldest player in World Cup history.
Uruguay won but doubts about the team’s attacking qualities remain.
“We want him on top form for Saudi Arabia and Russian Federation”.
“Very disappointing but I am sure the Egyptians can still win a game or two and qualify to the next round”, he said. “If Salah plays, we will just have to control his many strengths”, the 71-year-old coach said.
But speaking after the match, he explained: ‘Salah did not play today because we wanted to avoid risk or danger but I think that he will be fine for the next match.
