Luke Montgomery Giving Larry David $5000 for ‘Interrupting’ Trump’s SNL Monologue
Pretty, pretty, pretty, pret-tay weird, isn’t it? Live TV, a few of the nation’s best comedians and a presidential candidate who has stolen the show on the GOP side and defied political gravity doing it. Fireworks, right?
The camera panned to Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm creator Larry David: “I heard if I yelled that they’d give me $5,000”. And unsurprisingly, he had a look that said he’d rather be anywhere else. You’re rich…The world is waiting for you to be president so why are you hosting “Saturday Night Live?”. The previous high, according to Entertainment Weekly, was for a January 2012 episode hosted by basketball star Charles Barkley, with musical guest Kelly Clarkson.
“With me, it’s just magic”, he said, a reference to his campaign-trail promises that a Trump-led United States would be so great, Americans would “get exhausted of winning”. The system reported a month ago that Mr Trump would come back to the wireless transmissions for an erratic appearance on SNL.
The ratings bump comes as no surprise considering Trump’s outsized presence has brought a wave of attention to the Republican presidential.
NBC spent the weeks leading up to the episode batting down criticism from organizations like the National Council of La Raza, a Latino group that called Trump’s appearance a “slap in the face” to Hispanic viewers.
The network has not responded and Trump said he believes the controversy will boost the audience for the episode.
He previously hosted SNL in 2004 when he was still at the helm of “The Apprentice“. In an interview with the New York Post in late October, Trump was asked why he chose to host “Saturday Night Live” especially after NBC’s cancellation of the Miss Universe pageant. Starting off the show being called a “racist” by Larry David in his opening monologue, Trump may regret hosting, as we see the fallout of a less-than-average performance.
“SNL” had an extremely strong 11.7 rating at 11:30 p.m. on Channel 2, but quickly fell to a still strong 9.5 after 15 minutes.
Working the stage with Trump was musician Sia, who performed several of her biggest tunes to the packed house of ticket holders.
