M. Night Shyamalan to helm new adaptation of Tales From the Crypt
“Tales from the Crypt” will feature original and new stories – all executive produced by Shyamalan (“The Visit”, “Sixth Sense”) and his Binding Edge Pictures partner Ashwin Rajan.
There are only two recent dramatic anthology series that achieved long-running success: 1995’s edition of The Outer Limits, which lasted from 1995 to 2002, and of course FX’s current American Horror Story.
How does the new show go about things? The new series is expected to premiere this Fall. More on that possibility below. But for the truly courageous children with access to premium cable, Tales From The Crypt kept you up at night. So let’s just hope that that element is kept in there. “And we’re definitely going to utilize the underlying comics”.
Instead, this new show “will be highlighted by an old man with a cane, wearing a hood, and keeping warm by a fireplace”, according to the report. So, if true, that can go either way. Even though the HBO series was an R-rated endeavor, it shouldn’t be hard to do a series like Tales from the Crypt for a network that isn’t anywhere near as risque. Shyamalan will likely direct the first outing of the two-hour block. There were even some surprise directors for the series such as Michael J. Fox, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Tom Hanks.
Great news, boys and ghouls! As far as the golden age of horror television that we’re now enjoying, between The Walking Dead and The Strain, to say nothing of less-palatable also-rans like The Vampire Diaries, few shows have as much influence, with the possible exception of The X-Files.
The series is sometimes confused with a similarly named anthology title, Tales From the Darkside, which The CW attempted to reboot with a pilot order previous year, but declined to greenlight to series.
