Mac DeMarco voices support for Dakota Access Pipeline protests
So, what’s happening at Standing Rock now?
Activists, who call themselves “water protectors”, identified the injured woman as Sophia Wilansky and said she had traveled to North Dakota from NY several weeks ago to participate in the demonstrations.
Coverdell, who is posting video on YouTube of events as Tlingit Girl, was present November 20 when police began to shoot water at protesters in the below-freezing temperatures, as well as rubber bullets and tear gas.
Protests surrounding the pipeline came to a head this weekend when a NY woman, Sophia Wilansky, was seriously hurt.
“Almost the entire camp was in shock”, one of the protesters told reporters after the incident.”They talk about using non-lethal weapons, but when you’re talking about soaking people with freezing water in frigid temperatures, that’s life-threatening”.
Perhaps the only silver lining behind the heinous situation going on at Standing Rock is the number of people flocking to North Dakota to support the water protectors.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would not speculate on how a leak could affect the new water system. The protests received widespread attention when Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman covered the protests on the scene, releasing video footage showing the tensions between protesters and private security contractors. He also voiced concerns about the scale of arrests being made and characterizing the detention conditions as “inhuman and degrading”.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has contested the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The $3.7 billion, almost 1,200-mile long pipeline is being built by a Texas-based corporation called Energy Transfer Partners. The Standing Rock Sioux argue the pipeline’s planned path under the Missouri River threatens their water supply and cultural sites. Hamilton, who is a supporter of environmental groups throughout West Virginia, said she sees the pipeline as just the latest example of a Native American tribe being cheated. “It seems like with every action with every conflict that takes place they escalate their violent tactics by using some new type of weaponry, ‘ [she says]”.
Energy Transfer Partners asked a federal judge to immediately approve construction on federal land shortly after the Army Corps of Engineers’ announcement. If granted, the easement would allow the companies behind the pipeline to build a tunnel to carry natural gas under the Missouri River’s Lake Oahe reservoir as part of the project’s 1,172-mile route. A grenade exploded right as it hit Sophia in the left forearm, taking most of the undersurface of her left arm with it.
Senior North Dakota Republicans, including Gov. Jack Dalrymple, Sen. John says he is also concerned that local law enforcement are overstepping their authority.
State Emergency Services spokeswoman Cecily Fong says law enforcement costs related to the protests that have been ongoing since August reached $10.9 million last week.
President-Elect Donald Trump has not publicly commented on the project.
“It’s like you cared about me and you cared about my story.it was fantastic to hear you say that in front of people, in front of all the tribal leaders in DC”, Eagle said.
