Maccarinelli stuns Jones Jr with fourth-round KO
Once great Roy Jones Junior saw his fading career hit a new low on Saturday, December 12 as he was knocked out in the fourth round of a cruiserweight contest against Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli.
Jones was fighting in Moscow, his first fight in the Russian capital as he was recently granted Russian citizenship in September.
Roy Jones, Jr. had been making some hubbub about pursuing a cruiserweight belt, targeting the likes of Krzysztof Glowacki and Ovil McKenzie.
The win sees Maccarinelli’s record move to 41-7 with 33 knockouts, while Jones suffers his first loss in four and a half years, and falls to 62-9 with 45 knockouts. “But considering Jones Jr.’s age, it’s worth wondering if this is the end of his career”. They also mention some interesting notes on the fight.
Another referee may well have ended the fight there, but Jones continued and was duly dispatched soon after with a hammer overhand right.
The only resistance from the 46-year-old came from a well-timed left hook and right uppercut combination late in the third round, but it was to be his only reprieve.
Maccarinelli got off to good start, pressed the action and kept Jones’ back to the ropes for most of the fight. Perhaps he should heed the advice to hang up his gloves.
