MacGyver: Reboot Movie Also in the Works
Hot on the heels of a TV series announcement, the ingenious adventuring of “MacGyver” is also headed for cinema screens.
Company CEO Jon Feltheimer made the reveal today during Lionsgate’s earnings call with analysts. He said that creator Lee David Zlotoff will produce with The Fast and the Furious’ Neal Moritz. Feltheimer released no other information.
Recently, CBS ordered a pilot for a remake of the beloved 1980s procedural action-drama MacGyver. James Wan – who was previously attached to direct a MacGyver film – will direct the pilot, but just in case that doesn’t work out, Lionsgate has announced that they’re (still) developing a MacGyver movie.
The original series starred Richard Dean Anderson as a special agent known for getting out of a fix using his wits and unlikely items. Although there was no confirmation of the plot for the film, since both the TV show and movie reboot will be created by Lionsgate, it seems that the studio is attempting to set up a new shared universe for the action-heavy franchise.
Interestingly enough, with Aquaman’s DC colleague, The Flash, having a television version in Grant Gustin awkwardly awaiting the arrival of a contemporaneous big-screen doppelganger in Ezra Miller, there is already current precedence for this phenomena. It will certainly be interesting to see how this MacGyver multimedia Swiss Army knife and bomber jacket blitz shapes up in the coming months.
