Macklemore calls out Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea in ‘White Privilege II’
The magic, the passion, the fashion you toyed with.
The song is a natural sequel to Macklemore’s 2005 track “White Privilege”, which appeared on the rapper’s solo album “The Language Of My World”. He also makes sure to mention that most of the time, the police are doing the right thing, and if you run from them, you are in the wrong.
Macklemore’s steady and powerful flow has always suited socially conscious records, but his lyrics-a result of “ongoing dialogue with musicians, activists and teachers” in Seattle-adds weight to his decision to get involved in such a highly charged issue.
As Macklemore says in the song, “Black Lives Matter, to use an analogy, is like if there was a subdivision and a house was on fire”.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released their new single, “White Privilege II” on Thursday night as a free download.
Macklemore doesn’t spare his own success, declaring that “white supremacy protects the privilege I hold”, before freely admitting that he benefits from an unjust status quo. “Their work and engagement was essential to the creative process”.
He also revealed that as a company, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis LLC are working with four organizations to support “black-led organizing and anti-racist education & discourse”: Black Lives Matter, People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, Youth Undoing Institutional Racism & Freedom School, and Black Youth Project 100.
Take nine minutes, listen to the song and let us know what you think.
The song is the latest sampling from the pair’s forthcoming self-released album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, due out February 26.
