Macron’s white-knuckle handshake with Trump ‘wasn’t innocent’
French President Emmanuel Macron urged Donald Trump on Thursday not to take any hasty decisions on a global climate change deal that the US president threatened during his election campaign to abandon.
But Trump seemed to change his tune when meeting with Macron, with Trump reportedly saying “you were my guy” when the two met for their handshake matchup. It’s as though he’s saying, ‘Do you know who I am?
“I do not let anything pass”, he told JDD. In a video of the incident, which took place at a press gaggle ahead of the summit, the 39-year-old former investment banker is seen glancing at Trump’s hand before reaching in and squeezing, while clenching his jaw.
However, a source in the French delegation said Macron had repeated the EU’s position that the terms of the divorce must be first.

The awkward encounter saw each grip the other’s hand so firmly that their knuckles turned white. At one point, the president tried to pull his hand away, but Mr. Macron grabbed his hand even harder and kept pressing it.
There was even more arm wrestling upon Macron’s arrival at the festivities at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation headquarters.
After the awkward handshake, Macron met with a slew of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders, including Trump during a summit.

Macron told the French newspaper that the energetic handshake with Trump was meant to signify that theirs is a relationship between equals.
