“Mad Max: Fury Road” Leads Critics’ Choice Awards Nominees
Miller won Best Director & Best Film for Mad Max: Fury Road – the fourth providing in his long running franchise – while Blanchett was honoured with the coveted Longford Lyell award for her services to acting.
The film, which is already available on blu-ray and DVD, could see new life in theaters in greyscale form.
Don’t dismiss the idea, just yet.
Fury Road has dominated the fifth AACTAs, winning best film and best direction at Sydney’s the Star, adding to the six awards it won at the Industry Awards last week.
The George Miller-directed reboot scored a whopping 13 Critics Choice Awards nominations, including best picture, Charlize Theron for both best actress and best Actress In an action movie, Tom Hardy for best actor in an action movie and Miller for best director. Blockbuster movies don’t always get a fair shake from critics groups and other organizations, but the path toward Oscar is looking better with each passing day for George Miller’s film. What’s interesting, though, is that Miller had contemplated releasing Fury Road in its purest form: stripping out the dialogue for a black and white showcase that only featured the rousing score. “Mitchell says that an official version exists and could yet receive a theatrical release”.
The studio did re-release Fury Road back in September for a short one-week engagement, which has some of us believing that they could do it again for the black and white version that everyone is waiting to see. Maybe Warner Bros. will want to try and wring a little more money out of the film, especially now that it’s doing better than expected in the awards race, but it’s far from a sure thing. It’s worth pointing out that Mad Max: Fury Road, for all its charms, has done only okay at the box office.
We’re heartened to see that a big action film like Fury Road, which would normally be scoffed at by big artsy executives, is being given the honor it deserves. Let us know below.
