Mad Max Is The Surprise Awards Front-Runner
As one year ends, another Hollywood awards season begins.
After SAG announced its baffling nominations on Wednesday, which snubbed numerous perceived frontrunners, the Golden Globes nominees on Thursday were not as shocking. She’s doing something legitimately different, she’s doing it really well, and the show can use any bump it might get.
The Golden Globe television nominations aren’t considered as important, which is hammered in by the location of the nominees who always sit behind the movie stars during the awards show. According to tweets from Australian film critic Simon Miraudo, the Globes’ official Twitter account kept misidentifying presenter America Ferrera as Gina Rodriguez.
Luckily, attentive social media users did what they do best and captured the offending tweets – while throwing in some snarky responses for good measure.
“Carol”, the story of a married older lady who falls in love with a younger shopgirl in the Nineteen Fifties, garnered 5 nominations together with greatest drama film, director, rating and appearing nods for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It’s Louis-Dreyfus’s fourth nomination for the comedy, and the seventh in her career.
While many were tipping Rampling for a Best Actress Oscar nod for her performance, she and the film as a whole was overlooked when the nominations were announced. Among the list of lead actresses nominated in a motion picture, musical or comedy were BFF’s Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer.
In the best actor – drama category “The Revenant” star DiCaprio, who is yet to win an Oscar despite acclaimed roles, will fight it out with this year’s Oscar victor Eddie Redmayne for his gender bending role in “The Danish Girl”.
The biggest hits on the list are “The Martian”, with three nominations, and “Mad Max: Fury Road”, with two.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association swooned hardest for Todd Haynes’ 1950s lesbian tale “Carol”, which landed a leading five nominations on Thursday, including best picture, drama. Mark Ruffalo was nominated for another film, “Infinitely Polar Bear”, in which he plays a man with bipolar disorder. Similarly, I loved Hulu’s dark family comedy Casual, but would I have expected to see it alongside Silicon Valley and Veep on HBO, Transparent and Mozart In The Jungle (!!) on Amazon, and Orange Is The New Black on Netflix in the comedy series category? HBO’s “Game of Thrones” stood first with 28.2 million expressions, almost twice more than Netflix’s Narcos, which held 14.3 million expressions.
Several big-screen nominees are not even being released until Christmas.
Saoirse Ronan – Nominee for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama “Brooklyn“: “I can’t express how special it is that this little film called Brooklyn has been embraced by so many people around the world”.
FX’s “The Americans”, which seems to singularly suffer the role of best stealth drama (having been ignored for almost every award in its three seasons, other than the prestigious Peabody), maintained that status by escaping Globes notice again this year.
In December final yr, showbiz satire “Birdman” and coming-of-age film “Boyhood” have been already established as Oscar frontrunners.
