Mad Max, Scream Queens, and Penny Dreadful Get Golden Globes Nominations
Carol, the romantic drama film directed by Todd Haynes is leading the board.
In total, digital originals account for 12 nominations at this year’s Golden Globes, nearly double from last year’s list. And the Golden Globe winners will be announced 10th January 2016. One for “Best Television Limited Series” and a nominee for newcomer Lady Gaga who was given the “Best Actress in a Miniseries” nomination.
“Room“, based on a mother and her young child held in captivity, also picked up a nomination for Best Motion Picture in a Drama and writer Emma Donoghue got the nod for Best Screenplay in a Drama. This is nearly the exact same list that was named by the SAG Awards – now Smith and Johnny Depp, who was nominated by the SAG Awards for “Black Mass”, may be vying for the last slot in this category for the Oscars.
“In a sharp reversal of past patterns, Netflix, a relative upstart, captured eight television nominations, beating HBO, which had seven”, the Times wrote about Thursday’s announcements.
Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe also garnered a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for her role in “Outlander“, as did Eva Green for “Penny Dreadful“, which is filmed in Ireland.
In the race for best comedy or musical film are “The Big Short”, David O. Russell dramedy “Joy“, space blockbuster “The Martian”, zany caper “Spy” and Amy Schumer’s breakout film “Trainwreck“.
Past year around this time, the 2015 Golden Globes nominations were announced, with “Boyhood” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” the clear frontrunners in the awards-season sweepstakes.
For best actor in a drama, the nominees are Cranston, Redmayne, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs” and Will Smith for “Concussion“, a story about a pathologist who diagnosed degenerative brain disease in American football players. Landing four nominations were Adam McKay’s finance farce “The Big Short”, the Apple co-founder drama “Steve Jobs” and Alejandro Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant”.
“Veep” earned nomination in the best television series? musical or comedy, and the best actress category for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Also nominated in that category was Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn“, a 1950s tale about immigration.
Other notable absentees on the nomination rolls were HBO’s fading “Girls” as well as “True Detective” (which, after landing four nominations in its premiere season, was critically lambasted for its second cycle). With three nominations each, “American Crime”, “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander“, “Transparent” and “Wolf Hall” stand at the same spot.
Broadcast networks were shut out altogether in the music or comedy series category, where they used to glow.
The Globes, chosen by a group of about 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association rather than members of the film industry, have separate categories for comedy and drama and can include a wider array of films.
