“The sewer lines were plugged up and there wasn’t any water pressure, there wasn’t a washer and dryer … we didn’t have anything”, Weir said of the facility challenges. Each animal is evaluated for general health and temperament, and if these tests are not passed, alternative shelters better equipped to care for these issues are sought.
About 50 families and their pets showed up to meet Santa.
Blue Ridge Humane Society, Charlie’s Angels Animal Rescue and Foothills Humane Society had a variety of puppies, dogs and cats present in the gymnasium at the Parks and Rec Activities Center on South Grove Street. James Parham of Asheville admired the Labrador mix puppies with his 3-year-old granddaughter, Kenzie Hill.
Carey says, “There’s always a great need, especially right now, dog toys, cat toys, raw hides, are important for the dogs in the winter because they don’t get out as much…They help relieve the stress that the animals have”.
Parham said they had heard of the event and thought it would make a fun time out. While the pets are adoptable, Charlie’s Angels has a vetting process for potential adopters.
The shelter only offers cats and kittens up for adoption.
The Humane Society is non-profit organization.
Weir said he wished the owners would just come in and let shelter volunteers know about their animals.
