Madison student: Winning Rhodes Scholarship ‘surreal’

The Rhodes Trust announced in a statement that Emory University Senior Leah Michalove and Oberlin College senior Machmud Makhmudov of Lilburn have been chosen for the honor.

Jennifer Hebert of Pittsburgh, a University of Pennsylvania senior, is a member of the U.S. National Rowing Team who competed in the Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria.

“I’m shocked and overwhelmed right now”, Wheeler said.

According to Duke, Roberts and Ruckelshaus are the 44th and 45th students in the university’s history to receive a Rhodes scholarship.

“I do not believe I would be where I am today without the support I’ve had along the way”, he said. She was also a research assistant to chemistry associate professor Marya Lieberman on the Paper Analytic Device (PAD) project and a research assistant to sociology professor Christian Smith on the Science of Generosity project.

Famous Rhodes Scholars include U.S. Senator Cory Booker, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal and news anchor Rachel Maddow. “I think they’re aware of how stressful it is. The one thing I do want to say is that I am not surprised”.

Bogue is majoring in politics and founded “Seriatim”, the University of Virginia’s first journal devoted to American politics and political theory.

As a Kellogg global Scholar, she assisted sociology assistant professor Terry McDonnell with research on HIV/AIDS prevention campaigns for three years.
