Magnificent Mile Protests Disrupt But Don’t Deter Holiday Shopping

“I think it’s a good reminder, especially on Christmas Eve, that it’s not all about gifts and the commercialization of Christmas”, said Barbara Hutchinson, 64, from St. Louis.
The demonstration was peaceful, but after the main march concluded, police scuffled with a few dozen protesters who were trying to block the entrance to an H&M store and to obstruct traffic both ways on Michigan Avenue, a major thoroughfare.
Within seven minutes of the initial radio call, Officer Jason Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times, WMAQ reported.
Protesters have alleged that police attempted to cover up the shooting, and the Justice Department has launched a federal investigation into the Chicago police force’s practices.
Demonstrators protesting Laquan McDonald’s shooting death are hoping to disrupt shopping on the Mag Mile Thursday, like they did on Black Friday.
Protestors have continued to advocate for McDonald with a protest scheduled for Thursday on the Magnificent Mile luxury retail strip, the same area where protestors called for justice for McDonald last month during Black Friday protests.
Also, on Thursday dozens of protesters marched into San Francisco’s City Hall over the police killing of a black man earlier this month, demanding the firing of the city’s police chief.
Officers have already worn them in one North Side district. Eight people were arrested at the airport and four at the mall, reported the Washington Times.
Demonstrators are planning to march through downtown Chicago’s high-end shopping district again to draw attention to the 2014 police killing of a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white officer.
Demonstrators temporarily blocked the entrance to an Apple store, but most shoppers appear “undeterred”, the Associated Press reports. Protesters say Clark, who was unarmed, was wearing handcuffs when he was shot; the Police Department denies the allegation.
On Thursday, protesters said they wanted more resignations.
Sole said one of the reasons for the airport demonstration was “to highlight that many of our Muslim brothers and sisters” don’t get the same treatment as other travelers.
