Magnitude-4.4 Earthquake Shakes Southern California
A moderate quake shook an inland area of Southern California near San Bernardino on Tuesday night, giving a start to thousands across a heavily populated area with more than one person comparing it to a rumbling big rig.
It said the quake, about 4 kilometers south-west of Devore, happened at 1:48 p.m. UTC and was relatively shallow at about 5.6 kilometers below the earth.
The original quake was followed by at least three aftershocks with the strongest having a magnitude of 3.8, according to USGS.
This story is developing.
Meantime, south of the border, authorities reported that the quake was widely felt across the northwest Washington State.
There were no injuries or damage but power was for a time knocked out to some 4,500 homes in the region. “Haven’t felt one like that in a long time”.
“I was here all day and I felt the aftershocks”, said owner Stephanie Sanders.
Cassidy said scientists would be more certain of the estimated magnitude, once they analyze the quake’s wave forms and data.
The natural disaster had a depth of about three and-a-half miles, the USGS said.
No injuries or damage were reported as of 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Burguan tweeted.
Randy Baldwin, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey, says it was felt for a radius of 150 miles.
There have been five aftershocks following Tuesday’s quake including a 3.0-magnitude Wednesday afternoon.
“When we see these magnitude 4’s we get concerned that additional earthquakes could occur”, McNamara said.
Cassidy says it’s unlikely the B.C. and California quakes were linked, as they’re part of different fault lines.
