Magnitude 6.2 quake hits Mexico
The President, who took a tour of the town and talked to the residents, said that in Santiago Niltepec and throughout the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, the census of earthquake-affected people was complete and reconstruction work will start from next week. Mexico said 1,300 of its marines have been deployed to help, and volunteers, aid workers and officials have traveled from all over the world to Mexico to help with the recovery effort.
Saturday’s jolt triggered alarms and left street signs swaying, prompting brief evacuations from piles of rubble and buildings still standing.
Video footage posted online by IDF spokesman Peter Lerner showed crowds, including other search and rescue teams, applauding and cheering as uniformed Israeli rescuers walked through the street in Mexico City.
“They know because they have detected the warmth”, he said.
Israel did not set up a field hospital yet, but the army has said this could be added in the future. Many countries, including Israel, have sent aid delegations and funds in order to help Mexico during this hard time.
“Since September 7 it has not stopped shaking”, Mr Hernandez said.
Mexico’s army also has rescue dogs digging through the debris of damaged buildings, and a dog named Maya from the Jalisco state government was credited with finding two dead bodies on Thursday.
A new natural disaster sent Mexico City residents streaming onto the streets early Saturday, creating more alarm in a country still trying to recover from two powerful earthquakes over the past three weeks.
Since a massive 7.1 magnitude quake hit Mexico on September 19, 2017, crews have been working 24/7 to find victims trapped underneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.
“The downtown of Mexico City is notoriously vulnerable to earthquakes because of the very soft and wet ground underneath”. Many are uninhabitable, rendering occupants homeless.
At the Xoco General Hospital, which is treating the largest number of quake victims, workers ordered visitors to evacuate when seismic alarms began to blare.
Rescue crews continue to frantically work around the clock to save survivors in the deadly Mexico quake. At least 305 people died and dozens are still missing.
