Maisie Williams Is Over ‘Hot Piece’ Roles

It’s not as though an abundance of roles are available to actresses, never mind well-developed ones.

Finally, because two interviews aren’t enough, Williams sounded off on Twitter in response to the news that her Game of Thrones costars Dean-Charles Chapman and Nell Tiger Free may be seeing each other.

“There are a lot of roles that come in that are “the girlfriend” or “the hot piece” in a movie or TV series”, the 18-year-old told the paper.

“Sometimes being in this industry and reading awful things online – for anyone, not just me – does get on top of you so it’s nice to spend time with real people who are right in front of you”, she admitted to Britain’s ES Magazine.

“It will say “Derek: intelligent, good with kids, funny, really good at this” and then it will say “Sandra: hot in a sort of cute way” – and that’s all you get”, Williams said. She says they’re unrealistic; “hot” isn’t who a person is.

That said, Williams, who rose to fame playing Arya Stark, is well aware of her own privilege.

Just as she was grateful to Joe for his help, Maisie was also happy to take questions and give advice to her female co-stars, many of whom had not had as much acting experience as she has gained from starring in the HBO fantasy series.

Williams is not alone.

“I don’t want to wear these insane contacts for the rest of my time on Thrones!” “People think we’re f***ing stupid and we don’t know anything about anything. She really gave me a chance, and I’m so grateful for that”. “I mean, we’re trying to imitate life, and it seems to me a deeply saddening injustice that we are so uncreative and uninterested in developing representations of female life”.

It’s unclear from the set photos if Arya is still blind, as Williams as her eyes closed in each of them, but the smart money says the character still can not see. “Somebody on the street will go, ‘Oh, you’re going blind, ‘” she said. Many actresses have lamented the difficulty in capturing the few prominent female roles that aren’t a variation of manic pixie/hot piece/sidekick/girlfriend.
