Major Flub at Miss Universe Sets Internet Abuzz
Ariadna remained poised and professional as she had the crown removed from her head and given to Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines, and she later tried to remain positive about the huge embarrassment.
Unsurprisingly, last night, he announced the first runner up of Miss Universe as the victor. The contestant from the Philippines was the new Miss Universe, not Miss Colombia.
It’s no secret the Miss Universe franchise has faced drama this year, when GOP presidential contender Donald Trump sold the pageant to WME/IMG. Miss Philippines came back on stage, there were cheers and some boos.
If a pageant queen is measured for her grace under pressure, then Miss Colombia is still a victor. She later told reporters she wished the best to the crestfallen Miss Colombia.
“Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. The first runner-up is Colombia”, Harvey said.
An executive with pageant owner WME-IMG, Mark Shapiro, said Harvey caught the mistake and corrected it on his own, saying he wanted to make a wrong into a right. Colombia was listed as the first runner-up, and he’d been confused with how it was written.
Harvey says it was his mistake and that he takes full responsibility. “Still, it’s a great night”. Please don’t hold it against the ladies, please don’t. The Miss Universe organization also issued an apology on Monday. The next few minutes were met with awkward tension as Ms. Colombia waved to a cheering crowd but was not prompted to enjoy her win.
The sudden reversal even caught by the president by surprise, forcing him to reverse his initial celebratory tweet.
“I think she did a really good job with her reaction and with acting like a good title holder as Miss Columbia”, Miss Los Angeles County Rachael Maurer said.
“I had to ask them backstage many times, ‘Did I really win?”
“The excitement of live TV was evident tonight on The Miss Universe stage with over 10 million live fan votes tabulated”.
NBC dumped the pageant after Trump, its then-owner, angered many Latinos with comments about immigration. “This would never have happened!” the billionaire businessman tweeted.
He added: “Things happen”.
Other beauty pageant insiders said another possible solution could have been crowning co-winners. They tasked Truth with presenting the award for “Diva of the Year”, and he announced the victor as Paige. Neither event happened on live television, however.
