Major League Baseball hands suspensions for Ventura and Machado after brawl
His suspension, which was reduced by one game, was the harshest penalty among 14 players and coaches involved in the brawl.
Yordano Ventura threw at Manny Machado on goal.
While Ventura has been known for instigating brawls with hit-by-pitches and barking at players, this seems like an appropriate response to hitting Manny Machado and then getting hit in the face by the third basemen as he charged the mound.
Major League Baseball also fined each played an undisclosed amount Thursday. Per Jon Heyman, the Kansas City right-hander is facing a nine-game suspension. He was listed as being in the lineup, batting third, for Thursday night’s game against Toronto.
But the game’s most striking moment came in the fifth, when Ventura (4-4) drilled Machado in the back with a 99-mph fastball.
“I don’t regret anything”, he said. “We’ll see what happens”.
Last month, Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor was suspended seven games for punching Jose Bautista following an aggressive slide by the Blue Jays outfielder.
Baltimore loses their starting shortstop for four games. In 2014, they lost Machado for the final 44 regular-season games (knee injury), All-Star catcher Matt Wieters for the final 128 games (Tommy John surgery) and then-reigning home run champ Chris Davis for the final 17 games.
The Royals will miss Ventura for…one start.
The trouble between Ventura and Machado started earlier in the game.
The next time up, Machado was hit.
