Major League Baseball to investigate David Ortiz for Tampering
David Ortiz made some innocuous comments about fellow players at the All-Star Game, and they may land him in hot water with the league.
Back in April, WEEI, a sports radio station in Boston, posed the question of Encarnacion succeeding the Red Sox DH, and Ortiz responded by saying, “Hell yeah, he’s a ideal replacement”.
Groome entered yesterday as the second-highest remaining unsigned pick in the draft for any team, with the Marlins’ top pick, high school lefty Braxton Garrett, also outstanding.
Ortiz isn’t the first to suggest that Encarnacion would make an ideal replacement for him next season (and beyond) after he calls it a career.
“He has incredible stuff”, Ortiz said of Fernandez (via the Boston Herald) during a press conference after the All-Star Game on Tuesday.
“I thought he was gonna end up playing with me this year”. I mean, you never know.
The Blue Jays have enjoyed success against their AL East rivals this season, posting a division-best 23-19 record against AL East opponents, but they are just 7-6 against Boston this year, and 5-5 over 10 dates with the Orioles, according to the OddsShark MLB Database.
But now, it’s being reported that Ortiz could be slapped with a tampering violation by Major League Baseball.
The MLB states that “there shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager…unless the club or baseball employer with which the person is connected shall have, in writing, expressly authorized such negotiations dealing prior to their commencement”.
