Majority of US Citizens Disapprove of Obama Presidency, Poll Suggests
Despite a summer that saw the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare and traction on the Iran deal, President Barack Obama’s disapproval rating has inched up in August, according to a CNN/ORC poll released Friday.
Sixty percent of U.S. adults disapprove of the president’s actions regarding Tehran, a figured that is consistent with polling conducted in late June even before the finalized nuclear deal was reached in Vienna.
The poll also looked at several of the President’s policies which a majority believe are leading the country in the wrong direction.
Specifically, 62 percent disapprove of how Obama is handling ISIS, who controls some areas of Iraq and Syria, while 60 percent say they approve of his management of the U.S. relationship with Iran. Eighty-nine percent of Republicans now disapprove of Obama (82 percent did in July), while just 15 percent of Democrats disapprove (16 percent did in July).
The disapproval of President Obama is on the rise. Also, 55 percent said GOP congressional leaders’ policies are taking the country in the wrong direction, up from 49 percent in May. Only one in ten Republicans backed the deal, while 56 percent of the Democrats were in favor.
“That’s more support for closing the prison now compared with 2010, when 39 percent said it should be closed, but less than existed as Obama was about to take office in 2009, 51 percent backed closing the facility in January of that year.”
42 percent of independents approved in both polls. While 51 percent of overall respondents are opposed to sending ground troops to fight IS, 75 percent now believe it “likely” that this will eventually happen. “His next highest disapproval rating among Democrats is 23 percent on his handling of foreign affairs generally”.
This is while he’s sent a letter Democrats urging them to support the deal.
