MAKING THE TEAM Galaxy’s Oscar Soto named to MLS Homegrown team
Columbus fans may be in a tizzy after being under-represented in the MLS All-Star Game, but a pair of Black & Gold youngsters have been selected to participate in the festivities’ events.
Swanson, an 18-year-old rookie who has never made an official MLS appearance, is one of nine other midfielders on the roster, many of which have already established themselves as MLS regulars, including Chicago’s Harry Shipp, Vancouver’s Russell Teibert, Philadelphia’s Zach Pfeffer and Colorado’s Dillon Serna. The honor is Shipp’s second in as many years.
The New York Red Bulls may not be represented in the MLS All Star game this year, but their developmental players are once again on showcase in the annual MLS Homegrown Game.
Palmer-Brown, 18, has appeared in eight matches for Sporting Kansas City across all competition – including the team’s 2015 season opener and a 1-1 draw at Supporters’ Shield leaders D.C. United in May – since signing as a Homegrown Player in August 2013. Aside from MLS play, Pfeffer has received call-ups to the U.S. U-20 and U-23 national teams. The Colorado Rapids duo of Shane O’Neill (Colorado Rapids) and Dillon Serna (Colorado Rapids) will be joined by fellow U.S. Under-23 teammates Tyler Turner (Orlando City SC), Jalen Robinson (D.C. United) and Oscar Sorto (LA Galaxy).
Allen will reunite with San Jose’s Tommy Thompson and Sporting Kansas City’s Erik Palmer-Brown for the first time since the trio were a part of head coach Tab Ramos’ roster for the U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.
Chicago Fire standout Harry Shipp will make his second Chipotle MLS Homegrown Game appearance this year.
In four seasons Davis amassed eight goals and 17 assists, including an ACC-leading 10 assists during his senior year in 2014. The league’s all-time scoring leader will coach his side against Club America’s highly touted U20 team at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday, July 28 in the build-up to the All-Star Game.
